The Little Feat of Little Feet Kicking

On Monday afternoon, I came as close as I ever have to touching Pumpkin. I was sitting at my desk, typing away, when she started kicking. Only this time, it felt more forceful, and higher up, near my ribs. I touched my abdomen, and instead of feeling firm but with a little give (like an inflated kickball), it was hard in that one spot. It was her foot! Or her hand! Or something, but it was definitely HER, pressed up all the way out so I could feel it. When I pressed the spot, she kicked (or moved) again, and my heart started pounding so hard I could hear it in my ears. It was the most startling realization of her existence yet. Yes, yes -- the sonograms are proof, as is the movement -- but to actually almost touch her was more than I had expected.

Maybe this doesn't sound as amazing to anyone else. But for those brief few seconds, I was so close to my little girl that the insane magnitude of it all was more than I could wrap around my brain. It was unbelievably thrilling, and I can't believe I have to wait 12 more weeks to hold that little foot in my hands for real.
