I Own A Stroller
And a car seat. And a crib and a changing table. Is this only hilarious to me?
My in-laws came over for dinner Saturday night and brought their shower gift to us with them, since it was too heavy to lug around to the actual shower and then back home with me again. I had a feeling it was the travel system, and I was right. The travel system -- the stroller, car seat, and base, all in the "counting sheep" pattern -- now resides in Pumpkin's room, along with all the other stuff people have given her that I have no idea what to do with yet.
All weekend, I kept thinking to myself, "I own a stroller. And a car seat." Pretty soon, that car seat's going to get installed into the back seat of my car. I will actually have to learn how to use it, and then soon after, I will actually be strapping a real, live infant -- one that is completely my responsibility -- into that seat. I keep waiting for someone who knows better -- some sort of mature grown-up who has a better idea of safety-consciousness -- to step in and intervene. It's similar to the feelings I felt when we were buying our first house. The whole time we sat at this gigantic conference table and signed hundreds of documents detaling the hundreds of thousands of dollars we'd owe some mysterious bank over the course of 30 years, I kept waiting for my parents to walk in and say, "Ok, we'll take it from here." But they never did, and the bank and mortgage and real estate people actually let us leave with keys and then, all of a sudden, we had a condo and a mortgage. It's going to be like that in October, too, except we'll be TAKING HOME A BABY. One that will be ours, and one that we can't hand over to anyone else when we don't know what to do anymore. How did anyone ever let me get this far???
