4:24 p.m. - 2006-08-29 I started off the day by getting a manicure and pedicure, something I rarely do. I used to be a slave to my nails, getting my acrylics filled in every two weeks and agonizing over any small chip in the polish, but I took them off when I found out I was pregnant. At first I thought that this baby was just going to have to get used to its high-maintenance mama, but the first time I sat and waited in the salon for a fill-in when I was pregnant, the fumes choked me, and I thought, "I'm killing my baby!" and I fled the salon. So I wanted Saturday's experience to be really relaxing and pampering. I made an appointment at Aveda, my favorite salon. I showed up 10 minutes early, and the nail tech got to me about 15 minutes after my appointment time. It was going to be tight as it was, and this was now going to leave me no time for the "aromatic extras" I had booked. Oh well. I got my toenails done, and then my fingernails done, badly -- the tech missed a bunch of dead cuticle, and she glopped the polish on my nails with the finesse of a 5-year-old. She talked almost the entire time and I had no idea if she was speaking in English or Spanish, or both, because she was also a low-talker. So I just nodded my head at certain intervals and hoped I wasn't agreeing to wear a puffy shirt to my shower. The shower was wonderful, though. So many good friends and good food, and my God, the gifts! People love to buy baby girl clothes and my guests were no exception: this baby received a pink cashmere sweater set, and a pink Ralph Lauren jogging suit, among dozens of other adorable outfits. It was sweet to have so many people be so generous with and thoughtful of me. It really made me realize how lucky I am to have the friends and family that I do. After the shower, I headed home, and with the help of Gary and Shay, unloaded tons of new baby gear into her room. I spent a good chunk of time that evening unpacking presents and organizing, and I'm nowhere near done. But Pumpkin, you are so going to love this beautiful pink and yellow room, with all sorts of fun girly stuff decorating it. Unless, of course, you are really a boy. Then you might be annoyed with me.
